Introductory Speech of Eléonore Simonet - Belgium's Minister for the Middle Class, the Self-Employed, and SMEs
“ Good evening, everyone. (…)
Belwest's mission and vision are deeply inspiring. You stand for innovation, collaboration, and ambition: values that reflect not only the entrepreneurial spirit of Belgium, but also the dynamic energy of California. By building bridges between people, businesses, and cultures, Belwest strengthens the ties that unite us across the Atlantic.
With a board largely composed of women, and representatives of diverse backgrounds, Belwest embodies inclusiveness and forward-thinking values. This diversity is not only a strength; it is also a source of creativity that drives the Chamber's success.
Belwest also plays a key role as a bridge for companies, supporting businesses from Belgium, Luxembourg, and beyond, that seek to expand in the US, while also helping American companies discover the wealth of opportunities, that lie at the heart of Europe.
As you are aware, the transatlantic relationship between the US and Europe has faced considerable turbulence in recent months. Yet, the core ties between the US and Europe remain strong. Our economies are deeply interwoven, with substantial trade and investment flowing across the Atlantic.
You know here this better than anyone, and I see Minister President of Flanders, Belgium itself offers remarkable economic strength. With its strategic location, world-class infrastructure, highly skilled workforce, and leadership in sectors such as life sciences, green technologies, logistics, and digital innovation, Belgium is not only a gateway to Europe, it is a driver of progress on the global stage.
Ladies and gentlemen, the challenges we face today— geopolitical tensions, climate change, and economic disruptions— are too great for any nation to face alone. That is why the Belgian-American partnership matters more than ever. Because together, we are stronger, and Belgium's national motto says it best: 'Unity makes strength.”
Thank you. ”
